I don't know about other fifty something people, but I seem to get impatient with somethings in life. I just received a letter of disappointment from the college I'm attending. I screwed up and failed an awful course, philosophy. No, not the course where you ponder the ubiquitous side of life, and other divine adventures of a tree falling and does it make a sound. We get to ponder the square of A is B, A is not B, some A's are B and Some A's are not B. Who cares? I don't, I took my English classes and came out with a B. I'm not my father, who had English as a major and received A's. This subject is so dry, it is worse than the Sahara Dessert.
The professor I had, was a little looney. Acting as he were a psychiatrist, trying to figure out why I was failing. How about my waning enthusiasm !!!! I just don't understand what is to be so great about this course? It hasn't helped me with my major in the least bit! I learn more about my major by being taught by really good professors in my major !!! DUH !!! Another nauseated thought is about my adviser or lack thereof. No long talks, every end of semester a block of about 4 minutes spent with a PHD and he says "Did you bring your evaluation?" I'm not a 5 year old, and I know what I want to take and he isn't spewing out any hocus pocus magic with my schedule and no signs or gestures of wonderment about the future. Just okay take that, and this course and you should have one of those. Well, smack me on the forehead for I couldn't do that? Of course I could, 'cus I read the words.
Man, that's the one link that someone could oversee my future and guide me with wisdom. What courses could help me in my future? I have no clue, because not a single word has let me know what wealth of information has hidden in what books. No clue where the yellow brick roads begins and where it will end !! I had a great mentor in my first two years of my major. He told me where my weaknesses were and how to improve those areas, and what courses could prove to be a lot of work and which ones were a breeze. I wish everyone could have an adviser like that, I wish he were here now. I would get a straight answer coupled with directions to the next adventure.
So the next time you have a question about a course, talk to your adviser and if they don't answer it. Scream "Check please" and see the chairperson to request a change of advisers so that you can get a person that is going to really guide you and look out for the pitfalls of the program that you are in. It's your money, get its worth with a premium !!!!
